Typical Symptoms on Lamp Models

Won’t strike / cycles on then off

Projector attempts to start, lamp flashes briefly, then the unit powers down or retries. Often related to weak lamp, ageing ballast, poor ignition voltage, or blocked cooling.

  • Ballast ignition and strike stability check
  • Door interlock & seating inspection
  • Fan RPM confirmation to avoid false overheat

“Lamp” light on / dim image

End‑of‑life lamp, arc instability, or power supply ripple can cause flicker and low brightness. Cheap clone lamps accelerate reflector damage.

  • Photometry to confirm lumen output vs. spec
  • PSU ripple test under high‑brightness load
  • Colour wheel tachometer calibration

Colour flicker / loud whine

De‑balanced or fractured colour wheel; bearing wear after heat spikes. Results in strobing, loud spin‑up noise, or rainbow artefacts.

  • Wheel replacement with re‑index and re‑tension
  • Dust extraction from optics and ducts

White spots / star‑field artefacts

Classic DMD micromirror failure with mirrors stuck “on”. Requires DMD replacement and optical realignment; not fixable via resets.

Requires optical block disassembly.

Step‑by‑Step Troubleshooting Guides

1) Lamp won’t start (or shuts down in 30–90s)

  1. Disconnect mains and let the unit cool fully (10–15 minutes).
  2. Reseat the lamp module carefully; ensure the door switch is fully actuated.
  3. Check and clear dust from intake/exhaust vents; verify fans spin freely.
  4. Try a different power outlet and a short, quality power lead.

If you recently fitted a non‑genuine lamp, revert to a genuine module before deeper diagnosis.

2) Image dim / colour cast

  1. Run at full brightness for 10–15 minutes to stabilise the arc.
  2. Check Eco or Dynamic modes are not limiting brightness.
  3. Inspect colour wheel for dust or nicked segments.
  4. Perform a factory reset (if available), then re‑set geometry/keystone.

3) Overheating warning

  1. Confirm all fans spin at start; many models use multiple zones.
  2. Look for crushed ducts, missing shrouds, or clogged filters.
  3. Fan tach line failure can misreport RPM.
  4. Clean heatsinks and refresh thermal paste on high‑hour units.

4) White dots appearing

  1. Rule out source noise by testing multiple inputs and cables.
  2. Display a full‑black and full‑white test image; dots typically persist.
  3. DMD replacement is the corrective action.
